Illinois e-Services for Individuals

We have a variety of electronic services to help Individuals with their tax responsibilities. For descriptions of programs and other business information, please see the Individuals page. In addition, Electronic Funds Transfer is available to pay individual income tax and a variety of other taxes.

You may file your tax return using IL-1040 web file if
* You were an Illinois resident for all of 2008 and you are filing your return
for calendar year 2008.
* You (and your spouse, if filing jointly) have an Illinois Personal
Identification number (IL-PIN) or Illinois drivers license or ID card if no
IL-PIN has been assigned to you.
* You are not claiming "other subtractions" (IL-1040, Line 7) for a
distributive share of subtractions from a partnership, S corporation, trust,
or estate, an August 1, 1969, valuation limitation amount from Schedule F, an
enterprise or river edge redevelopment zone and high impact business dividend
subtraction amount from Schedule 1299-C, or other income not specifically
identified on Schedule M.
* You do not have a recapture of investment tax credits from Schedule 4255.
* You are not taking a credit for tax you paid to another state or other
credits from Schedule 1299-C.
* You are not claiming pass through entity payments made on your behalf by a
partnership, S corporation, or trust.
* You are not filing for a deceased taxpayer.

If you do not meet all of these requirements, you cannot use IL-1040 web file this year. Please consider using another electronic method to file your return or complete a paper Form IL-1040.

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

* Your (and your spouse's, if filing jointly) Illinois Personal Identification
Number (IL-PIN) or Illinois drivers license or ID card if no IL-PIN has been
assigned to you;
* Your completed federal income tax return; all of your W-2, W-2G, 1099-G, and
1099-R forms; your Illinois Property Tax bill or statement (for property tax
paid in 2008 on your principal residence);
* Your receipts or other statements identifying any qualified education
expenses you paid.
* Your checking or savings account information if you choose to directly
deposit your refund or debit the amount you owe.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Do I have to mail anything if I use IL-1040 web file to file my return?

* If you are expecting a refund or if you owe tax and choose to pay your
balance by credit card or electronic funds withdrawal, do not mail anything.

* If you owe tax and choose to pay by check or money order, you must mail your
payment with an IL-1040-V, payment voucher for Individual Income Tax. This
voucher is located in the IL-1040 web file program and you will need to print
it at the end of your filing session.

Mail your payment and voucher to

ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE
SPRINGFIELD IL 62726-0001

Be sure to write your Social Security number on your check.

Do I have to use an electronic deposit or payment option if I file my return through IL-1040 web file?

* No. An electronic direct deposit of your refund or electronic debit of the
amount you owe is available within the program but you are not required to
use these options. If you do not want to have your refund directly deposited,
do not complete the direct deposit information and we will mail you a paper
check. If you do not want to have the amount you owe directly debited from
your checking or savings account, do not complete the debit information, and
you may then pay by credit card or check. More information about these
payment options is available after you file your return.

If I owe a tax liability, what are my payment options?

* You may pay the amount you owe by direct debit from your savings or
checking account, by credit card, or by paper check. Complete details on
these payment options are provided after you file your return when you
click the "Exit" button.
