Individual Income and Estimated
Description: Tax is imposed on Iowa net income of individuals and estates and
trusts.
* Individuals who have a net income of greater than $9,000 must file an Iowa
income tax return.
* Married taxpayers with a combined net income of greater than $13,500 are
required to pay Iowa income tax.
* A person claimed as a dependent on another person's Iowa return and having a
net income of $5,000 or more is required to pay Iowa income tax.
* Individuals may also be subject to the minimum tax on tax preferences and a
tax on lump sum distributions from pension plans.
Exemption for persons age 65 or older:
* For the 2007 and 2008 tax years, a married couple or a head of household
with a total income for the year of $24,000 or less may file for exemption,
if at least one spouse (in the case of a married couple) or the head of
household is 65 years or older as of December 31 of the year. Starting with
the 2009 tax year, this amount is increased to $32,000.
* For the 2007 and 2008 tax years, a single person who is 65 years or older as
of December 31 of the tax year may file for exemption if their income is
$18,000 or less. Starting with the 2009 tax year, this amount is increased
to $24,000.
Due Date(s) of Returns: The final return and any tax owing is due by the last day of the fourth month following the close of the tax year. Individuals may be required to remit estimated tax payments quarterly.
Income tax is also collected through withholding tax. Depending on the amount of tax withheld, withholding tax deposits are due annually, quarterly, monthly or semi-monthly.

Balance due? Can’t pay in full?
* File your income tax return and pay what you can.
* We suggest making voluntary payments prior to receiving a bill.
* You will be billed for the balance after your return is processed, including
any penalty and/or interest due.
* Once you receive a bill, contact the phone number on the bill to discuss any
remaining balance due, including the possibility of a payment plan. Iowa
does not have a payment plan option until after a bill is issued.
* Interest will accrue on the first of each month until the balance is paid.

1. You will need the free Acrobat Reader (6.0 or newer).
2. Use the "hand tool" in the Reader.
3. You may go from line to line with the mouse and click on the space to fill
in or you may use the tab key to move from line to line.
4. Use the space bar to insert a check mark.
5. To go back or correct a line, use your mouse and click on the space you
wish to change.
6. You cannot save the completed form to your hard drive unless you have the
Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional program.
7. The Print button will not print.
8. Print at least two copies, sign them, keep one for yourself,and mail one
with your other documents to the address on the form.
9. The Reset button on each fillable form is an additional security measure.
When you are finished filling out the form, please click the button. This
button will not print.
Business Tax
Iowa Corporate Income Tax
Description: The tax is imposed on the Iowa net income of corporations doing
business within this state or receiving income from property in the
state. For tax years on or after January 1, 1987, Iowa imposes an
alternative minimum tax equal to 7.2% of Iowa tax preferences. For
tax years on or after January 1, 1988, the tax is imposed on the
unrelated business income of nonprofit corporations.
Tax Rate: 6% on first $25,000; 8% on next $75,000; 10% on next $150,000; 12% on
all over $250,000
Distribution of Funds: State General Fund
Due Date(s) of Returns: Corporation tax returns must be filed by the last day of
the 4th month after the close of the tax year.
Cooperatives must file a return on or before the 15th day
of the 9th month following the close of the cooperative’s
tax year. Estimated tax payments are due from most
corporations on a quarterly basis. Nonprofit corporation
returns with unrelated business income are due on the 15th
day of the 5th month following the close of the tax year.
