Individual Income Tax Forms
* Forms and instructions are offered in Adobe Reader PDF format. You will need the
free Adobe Reader installed on your computer to view and print these files.
Minnesota filing requirements for individuals
* You are required to file a Minnesota return if your Minnesota gross income meets
the minimum filing requirements. Although you will use all sources of income to
determine if you must file a Minnesota return, only your net income will be
taxed. However, each situation is unique and may change depending on your
residency status.
How to file a return
* There are two ways you can file your Minnesota individual income tax return—
either by electronic means or by paper. The following information will help you
decide.
Where to mail your individual income tax return
* If you are filing a paper Minnesota return, mail your Form M1 and all attached
Minnesota and federal forms and schedules in the printed envelope included in
the M1 booklet. If you don't have the printed envelope, mail your forms to:

Instructions for filing a paper return
The department uses scanning equipment to capture information from paper returns. To ensure accurate processing when filing a paper Form M1, it is important that you choose the right set of instructions for your situation:
If you are filing a paper Form M1 that you complete on the screen and print out on your printer, you can download the onscreen version of Form M1 here. Read the note shown on the screen then follow the instructions below for filling it out:
1. To enter the information, just click the cursor in the appropriate area and
type in the information.
2. Move from field to field using the Tab key. This will ensure that your data
stays in the appropriate area.
3. Use whole dollar amounts.
4. Leave lines blank if they do not apply to you or if the amount is zero.
5. To mark an “X†in an oval box, just click inside the oval.
6. To indicate a negative number, use the minus sign. When you use a minus sign,
an “X†will automatically appear in the designated box.
7. When you go to print your completed return, make sure that "Auto-rotate and
center pages" is checked in the Print Options. DO NOT check the "Shrink to fit"
or "Expand to fit" boxes. If these boxes are already checked, simply click on
them to uncheck.
8. Sign your return. Your spouse must also sign if you are married and filing a
joint return.
9. Assemble behind your Form M1 your Minnesota schedules according to the sequence
number at the top of each. Place a copy of your federal return and schedules
behind your Minnesota forms. Do not send in your W-2 or 1099 forms.
10.Do not use staples on your return. If you want to ensure that your papers stay
together, use a paperclip.
Use correct postage
* To avoid having the U.S. Postal Service return your income tax forms to you for
more postage, be sure to include enough postage on your envelope. If you enclose
more than three sheets of paper, you will probably need additional postage.
