The Missouri Department of Revenue serves as the central collection agency for all state revenues. The department's primary duties include collecting taxes, titling and registering motor vehicles, and issuing driver licenses.

Fill-In Forms

PDFs can be made "fillable". The Department of Revenue has provided some forms that you can complete on your computer screen, and then prepare for printing. Forms that require figures, such as tax amounts, are even designed to calculate results, thus eliminating common math errors. Due to the design of the Acrobat Reader software, you cannot save the information you type into the form, even though you can save the blank form.

Printing Tips

Remember that a high quality printer is necessary to print usable copies of the forms. Any laser, ink-jet, or bubble-jet printer in good working order should be fine. Some high quality, high resolution dot matrix printers may work.

About Adobe Acrobat Reader

To view and print the forms and information available in PDF on the Missouri Department of Revenue site, all you need is the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free and can be run as an independent program or as a "plug-in" for most major web browsers to allow on-line viewing of PDF documents.

We recommend using the most recent version of the Acrobat Reader, but at least version 4.0 (or higher). Some forms and documents will not open with an older version of the Reader.

If you are not able to install and configure the Reader software, please e-mail us with the names and numbers of the forms you need and we will be happy to send them to you by regular mail.

Nonresidents and Residents with Other State Income Tax Filing Guide

Filing Requirements

You do not have to file a Missouri return if you are not required to file a federal return. If you are required to file a federal return, you may not have to file a Missouri return if:

* you are a resident and have less than $1,200 of Missouri adjusted gross
income;
* you are a nonresident with less than $600 of Missouri income; or
* your Missouri adjusted gross income is less than the amount of your standard
deduction plus your personal exemption.

Definitions (Residents, Nonresidents, Part-Year Residents)

Resident - An individual who is domiciled in Missouri, unless the individual:

1. maintains no permanent place of abode in this state;
2. does maintain a permanent place of abode elsewhere; and
3. spends in the aggregate not more than 30 days of the taxable year in
Missouri.
OR

Resident - An individual who is not domiciled in Missouri but:

1. did have permanent living quarters in Missouri; and
2. spent more than 183 days of the taxable year in Missouri.

Nonresident - An individual who is not a resident of Missouri. A Missouri domiciled individual is considered a nonresident for tax purposes if the individual:

1. maintains no permanent place of abode in Missouri;
2. maintains a permanent place of abode elsewhere; and
3. spends in the aggregate not more than 30 days of the taxable year in
Missouri.

Part-Year Resident - An individual domiciled elsewhere prior to moving to Missouri or establishes domicile elsewhere after moving from Missouri. A part-year resident is treated as a nonresident but may determine his tax as if a resident for the entire year.

How do I select the easiest tax form that satisfies my tax filing needs?

* Short forms help you avoid becoming confused by tax laws and procedures that
do not apply to you.
* All Missouri short forms allow the standard or itemized deduction.
* Choose continue and we'll ask you a series of questions to lead you to a
simplified form that will reduce the time it takes to complete your return!

How do I correct a mistake I made on my electronic or paper tax filing?

Use the MO-1040 for the year being amended. Check the box on the form to indicate it's an amended return.
