Traditional and Web Fill-In Forms

To complete the traditional form, you must first print the form and then write or type the required information on the form. Web fill-in forms are completed by using your computer to enter the required information and print the completed form.

Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5 or higher is needed to download the forms.

The Department uses scanning equipment to process tax returns. Copies are not accepted because even minor skewing caused by copy machines result in the form not scanning properly. For the same reason, faxed forms cannot be scanned.

Getting Started With Your State Taxes

1. Determine if you should file a North Carolina individual income tax return and
also determine if you are eligible for the state’s new Earned Income Tax Credit
2. Determine your federal taxable income, which is the starting point for your
state individual income tax return.
3. Review the instructions on how to file your state taxes.
4. Gather your records in advance.
5. Get the right forms. Form D-400 is the North Carolina individual income tax
return. If you are claiming tax credits, you must attach the Form D-400 TC.
6. Learn about any tax credits for which you are eligible.
